Introduction

Canada's animal health system is composed of a series of connected value chains.  Recent outbreaks of BSE, SARS, West Nile Virus and Avian Influenza have demonstrated to Canadians that once a contaminant or disease affects any of the value chains, the whole system is affected.

The objective of this document is provide a “bird’s eye-view” of the process proposed for engaging as many partners as possible in the development of the National Animal Health Strategy since it will influence what Canada’s future animal health system will look like in 5, 10 or 15 years.

Greater knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the players involved in Canada's animal health system and of the interests and interactions between the different players in each value chain will, no doubt, lead us to build an integrated system that optimizes animal health and welfare in the balanced interest of society, the economy and the environment.
