CURRENT STATUS OF THE FARMED ANIMAL INDUSTRY

The Canadian livestock industry is a very significant component of the Canadian processing, retail, food service, and rural economy.  Over the past five years, this sector has faced massive shocks from animal disease outbreaks (e.g. bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), avian influenza, circovirus, chronic wasting disease), the rising value of the Canadian dollar, and now the growing input pressure due to the expansion of the North American bio-fuels industry.
