Developing an Animal Health Science Agenda for the National Animal Health Strategy (NAHS)

Expectations of Regional Workshop Participants

February 15th, 2008

This document is available in PDF Format (200 kB)

In the interest of forming a representative and comprehensive Animal Health Science Agenda, regional workshops are planned for each of Canada’s five Veterinary Colleges to engage animal health science stakeholders in an open consensus building process.  At least two rounds of regional workshops are planned, with the first set occurring in February-March 2008 and the next round in early autumn 2008.

Key officials who are representatives of their regional animal health science communities (e.g., universities, provincial governments, related industry, etc) are being brought together to provide important input on draft strategy documents.  The aim is to build national consensus on an agenda for future animal health science that would allow all partners to plan proactively.
Workshop participants are viewed as leaders whose interests are representative of those within their community.  They are considered to be innovative thinkers who have positions within their organization that can influence animal health science budgets and planning.  Over the course of the next 12 months, workshop participants are expected to actively contribute to the development of a national animal health science agenda.  Specifically, they are expected to:

Pre-Workshop:
  • Prepare for each workshop by reading assigned background materials and drafts (e.g., workshop reports, draft strategic direction, etc) prepared by the national Working Group (WG) on Future Animal Health Science.
Workshop:
  • Actively participate in each workshop by contributing to innovation, cooperation and consensus across communities
Post-Workshop:
  • Help explain or “roll out” the tentative conclusions reached and any other workshop results to all leaders within their community group and as many other stakeholders as are or can be interested
  • Collect, consolidate and summarize feedback from their community group for WG consideration in supporting nation-wide strategic planning of future animal health science.  Material to be submitted to regional coordinators (to be announced).

If further information is required on the role of workshop participants or on the status of Animal Health Science Agenda, please contact Dr. Shane Renwick, Director, Animal Health Science Foresight (CFIA) (renwicksat_signinspection.gc.ca) or any member of the Working Group on Future Animal Health Science.
